What to Do in Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam is a small town located on the east bank of the Nile River in Egypt, about 120 kilometers north of Cairo. The town was founded in 1250 by the Mamluks as a military outpost and trading post. Over the centuries Marsa Alam has been sacked and reclaimed several times by invading armies, most notably by Napoleon’s forces in 1798. The town has a population of approximately 9,000 people. The main attraction in Marsa Alam is the ancient fortress known as El-Bahariya, which was built by Sultan Qaitbay in 1406 to protect his eastern border from Egyptian rebel bands. Today El-Bahariya is one of Egypt’s most popular tourist destinations and can be visited on a guided tour or self-guided tour.
